AdventHealth, a Florida-based nonprofit hospital system, is seeking public support for a major expansion of its planned hospital in Weaverville, months before it can officially apply for state approval. The proposed expansion would increase the facility from 93 to 222 beds, making it the second-largest hospital in western NC and the first significant competitor to HCA-owned Mission Health.
AdventHealth has already received state approval for 67 beds and is awaiting a ruling on a contested application for 26 more. The additional 129 beds can’t be officially requested until October 15. Meanwhile, AdventHealth is collecting support letters and continuing site work.
Novant Health has also announced plans to apply for the same 129 beds, renewing competition with AdventHealth and potentially Mission Health. Legal challenges from HCA-Mission have already delayed previous AdventHealth approvals.
The project’s total cost will exceed the original $254 million estimate, and the timeline for opening, originally projected for 2027, may be pushed back due to the ongoing legal disputes
If approved, the hospital will serve Buncombe, Graham, Madison, and Yancey counties and could bring thousands of jobs to the Weaverville area.
