Irene Washburn McKinney, age 93, of George McKinney Circle in Spruce Pine, passed away Thursday, August 7, 2025 at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals in Asheville.
Born on May 15, 1932 in McDowell County, she was the daughter of the late Arvey Leonard and Magie King Washburn. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Emory McKinney who passed away in 2010. Also preceding her in death was her son; Ronnie McKinney, her brothers; Donald and Johnny Washburn, and her sisters; Ruth Edwards, Betty McGee and Joyce Self.
Irene was a member of the Grassy Creek Baptist Church and was retired from American Thread. She was known as a very independent person. She loved spending time with her family, taking care of her family, cooking for family get togethers and also taking care of others. She also took great pride in sending cards to her family and friends on their birthday, anniversaries and other special occasions. She enjoyed square dancing and going on trips to the beach.
Left to cherish her memories are her son; Latrelle McKinney and wife, Jody Quist-McKinney of Chambersburg, PA, her brothers; Bill Washburn and Jim Washburn both of Marion, her sister; Jackie Rief of Marion, her grandchildren; Summer Shuford of Burnsville, Christopher McKinney of Shakopee, PA, Natalie Strictland of Lexington, KY, Nicholas McKinney of Orrstown, PA, Dustin McKinney and Andrew McKiney both of Chambersburg, PA, her great granddaughters; Mya and Chloe Strictland of Lexington, KY.
The funeral service for Irene McKinney will be Sunday, August 10, 2025 at 3:00 pm at the Grassy Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Gene Self and Dr. Rocky Branch officiating. Interment will be in the Grassy Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday, August 10, 2025 from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm at Grassy Creek Baptist Church.
