Yancey County Schools’ Teacher of the Year Jeremy Dotts and the MHHS Carpentry program continue to receive appreciation and support. Under Mr. Dotts’ leadership, the MHHS Carpentry program has undertaken a wide range of impactful projects. Students have constructed dog houses for the Yancey County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit, gazebos for local middle schools, and fully functional modular homes. Following the devastation of Hurricane Helene, Mr. Dotts and his students partnered with the nonprofit Rebuilding Hollers to construct tiny homes for local residents displaced by the flooding.

The MHHS Carpentry program has earned both state and national recognition for its community-focused work and continues to receive generous support. Just this week, Yancey-Mitchell Pillars, the nonprofit organization supporting the MHHS carpentry initiative, received $57,000 in donations from the Mt. Mitchell Community Fund, the North Carolina Home Builders Association, and the Branch Group. These contributions will help sustain the program’s mission and its commitment to supporting the recovery and resilience of the Yancey County community.

For the past 15 years, Mr. Dotts has served as the Carpentry Instructor at MHHS, where he has consistently brought practical, real-world experience into the classroom. With a background as a general contractor, Mr. Dotts provides students with hands-on learning opportunities through meaningful, real-world construction projects.

Over the past couple years, Mr. Dotts has received numerous accolades recognizing his innovative approach to education and outstanding contributions to career and technical education. His recent honors include: YCS Teacher of the Year, Appalachian State University GEAR UP Innovator of the Year, North Carolina Home Builders Association Educator of the Year, and First Bank “Out of This World” Teacher Award.

Yancey County Schools congratulates Mr. Dotts on these well-deserved honors and celebrates the continued success of the MHHS Carpentry program under his leadership.
