Paul M. Helsher, age 95 of Green Mountain, NC, passed away on Monday, September 1, 2025, at Smoky Ridge Health & Rehabilitation.
A native of St. Louis, MO, he was born on November 8, 1929, to his late parents, Henry and Dora Khun Helsher. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Ruth, and brother, Harold.
Paul was an avid adventurer and cherished member of the community. He leaves behind him a legacy of joy, laughter, and compassion. Paul embraced life with an infectious enthusiasm that touched everyone he met. Whether it was tubing down a river, horseback riding through scenic trails, or racing go-carts, Paul lived life to the fullest. An avid animal lover, Paul had a special bond with all creatures great and small. His home was a sanctuary for animals, and he even raised five possums, each one a testament to his nurturing spirit. Paul’s dedication to animal welfare extended beyond his home, as he was a proud member of the Humane Society of Yancey County, where he worked tirelessly to advocate for the well-being of animals. Paul was not only an animal person but also a people person. His dry humor and quick wit brought smiles and laughter to those around him. He had a unique ability to connect with people, making everyone feel valued and appreciated. Paul was also a retired U.S. Marine Lt. Col. who served his country with honor and dedication for more than 22 years. His commitment to service and his unwavering sense of duty were evident in all aspects of his life. Paul Helsher’s adventurous spirit, love for animals, and warm personality will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched. Rest in peace, Paul. Your legacy of kindness, adventure, and service will never be forgotten.
Left to cherish his memories is his beloved wife of 55 years, Sharon Helsher; granddaughter: Kristin (Lance) Beuckman; grandsons: Joshua Helsher and Corey (Hannah) Helsher; and great-grandchildren: Elijah, Talyn, Nolan, Junah, and Elizabeth (Lizzy).
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at Higgins Methodist Church – 101 N Main St, Burnsville, NC 28714. The family will receive friends and loved ones for visitation from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., with the service starting at 4:00 p.m. Pastor Burt Williams will be officiating. Sgt. Emmit L. Randolph Chapter No. 57 Disabled American Veterans will conduct veterans’ burial rites.
