Thelma Young Pittman

Thelma Young Pittman, age 86, of Biggerstaff Road in Spruce Pine, went home to be with the Lord surrounded by her family on September 11, 2025.

Born on October 24, 1938 in Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Cordie Young. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Clayton Pittman, a son-in-law; Doug Staton; her brothers; Carol and Robert Young and her sisters; Betty Effler and Doris Jones.

She was a cosmetologist for thirty years and never left her house without every hair in place and her make-up just right. If you went out anywhere with her you would most likely hear someone tell her how beautiful she was and how young she looked. She made sure that her and Joe’s clothes matched when they went to church on Sunday.

Thelma was a faithful founding member of Temple Baptist Church in Newland where she served as treasurer for forty-six years. She was a godly woman whose wisdom and willingness to share it was sought out when someone needed loving guidance. She was the cornerstone of faith and strength for her family and her church. Thelma had the gift of cooking and hospitality. Her family gathered at her home every Sunday after church for as long as she was physically able. This was a very cherished family tradition that helped keep her family close. She opened her home to so many friends, pastors, and strangers regularly for an amazing home-cooked meal. Her church family was a very important part of her life and her presence in her church will surely be missed.

Left to cherish her memories are her daughters; Gail Staton and Pamela (Donnie) Staton her son, Gary (Faye) Pittman; her grandchildren; Dayna Staton, Renae (Rodney) Pittman, Derrick (Merina) Staton, Amber (Kevin) Roberson, Krista (Jay) Mathis, Samuel Grindstaff, Sarah (Nick) Miller, Mandy Gossett, and Drew Staton, her great grandchildren; Daisy (Skylar) Mace, Cole (Emily) Shipman, Dylan Ledford, Faith Ledford, Alli Pittman, Ava Joy Pittman, Joshua Roberson, Levi (Emily) Roberson, Maddison Mathis, Katie Jo Mathis, Dylan Grindstaff-Dyal, Jonathan Yelton, Roman Miller, Zoey Gossett, and Annabelle Staton; great-great grandchild; Macklin Mace; and her sisters; Jackie Cornett, Phyllis (Wayne) Towsend; Rebecca Young and sister-in-law; Faye (Pat) Howell and special friends; Dean and Renee Dellinger of Newland and James and Brenda Gibson of Tennessee.

A time to support the family, share memories, and receive friends will be Sunday, September 21, 2025, from 2:37 pm – 3:37 pm at Temple Baptist Church, Newland with the funeral service immediately following visitation. Interment will be in the Temple Baptist Church Cemetery. The family appreciates your continued thoughts and prayers.
