The N.C. Forest Service is reminding residents to take steps now to protect homes and neighborhoods from wildfires, which typically increase in North Carolina from October through early December. Last year, nearly 5,600 wildfires burned more than 34,000 acres across the state, often sparked by backyard debris burning and escaped campfires.

Homeowners can reduce risk by clearing leaves, pine needles, and other flammable materials from roofs, gutters, decks, and yards, storing outdoor items away from the house, trimming trees and shrubs, and removing combustible materials within 30 feet of their home. Residents should also seal vents and other openings and be prepared to evacuate if needed.

For those burning debris safely, always obtain a valid burn permit, avoid burning on dry or windy days, keep fires small, and have water or dirt on hand to fully extinguish fires. Never use flammable liquids to start or speed up a fire.
