A major safety improvement project is bringing brighter, longer-lasting pavement markings to Avery County highways.

The N.C. Department of Transportation has hired TRP Construction Group under a $268,000 contract to install new pavement markings on several key routes in Avery and neighboring Watauga counties. The work covers nearly 30 miles along N.C. 105, U.S. 321, and N.C. 194.

In Avery County, drivers will see upgrades along N.C. 105 from just south of Broadstone Road to U.S. 221 in Linville—one of the area’s most heavily traveled stretches. Crews will also improve markings on U.S. 321 heading toward the Tennessee state line.

The new hot-spray thermoplastic markings are designed to be more reflective and longer-lasting than traditional paint. Similar materials were used on King Street in Boone earlier this year.

Work began this week with crews removing old stripes on N.C. 105. Most of the installation will take place at night to minimize traffic impacts, weather permitting.
