The North Carolina Department of Transportation is urging drivers to plan ahead and expect delays as work continues on the I-26 widening project. Starting Sunday night, a contractor will begin removing the old Blue Ridge Parkway bridge over I-26 in sections. That means overnight closures in both directions of the interstate—from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m.—beginning Sunday, October 19th through Thursday, October 23rd, and again October 26th through the 30th.

Extra signs will help guide drivers through detours, which are expected to last about two weeks, though the timeline could be extended.

The new Blue Ridge Parkway bridge will remain open, but NCDOT says drivers should still expect occasional short delays from construction and fall traffic.
