Two Small Earthquakes Reported Near Marion

Two minor earthquakes were recorded in western North Carolina early Friday morning, October 24. Both quakes occurred near the town of Marion in McDowell County.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the first quake, measuring magnitude 2.2, struck just after midnight at a depth of about six miles. A second tremor, occurring around 5:35 a.m., registered at a shallower depth of roughly two miles.

No damage or injuries have been reported. The last earthquake in the region was a 1.8 magnitude event near Bakersville on September 11.
