LTC (Ret.) Daniel M. Owens

LTC (Ret.) Daniel M. Owens, 95, passed away peacefully on the morning of October 15, 2025, in Spruce Pine, North Carolina.

Born in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, in 1930, Daniel lived a full and remarkable life marked by faith, service, love, laughter, and a steadfast devotion to family.

At the age of 18, Daniel enlisted in the South Carolina National Guard, beginning a distinguished 23-year military career that spanned two wars. He led Infantry troops during the Korean War and later served as a commissioned officer in Military Intelligence during the Vietnam War. His leadership, courage, and integrity earned him the respect of all who served alongside him. He retired honorably at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

While stationed in Germany during the Vietnam era, Daniel met the love of his life, Christa. Together, they built a life rooted in love, laughter, and shared adventure that spanned more than five decades, until her passing in January 2025.

A man of deep faith, Daniel lived his life guided by his relationship with the Lord. His faith was evident in his generosity, kindness, and the grace he extended to everyone he met.

After retiring from the Army, Daniel continued his lifelong mission of service through education. He taught High School ROTC in High Point, North Carolina, before joining the Association of General Contractors (AGC), where he managed continuing education programs. He later directed programs at both Winthrop University and Pfeiffer University, shaping and mentoring countless students and professionals. His work ethic and love of teaching endured—he continued working full-time until the age of 88.

Beyond his distinguished service and professional life, Daniel will be remembered for his Southern hospitality, his love of animals—especially dogs—and his great sense of humor. He delighted in preparing traditional Southern dishes for family and guests alike, ensuring that no one ever left his home hungry. Dan enjoyed life’s simple pleasures—his naps, his snacks, and time shared in good conversation and laughter. He also had a large book collection and enjoyed reading and sharing knowledge.

Daniel traveled extensively throughout his life, but his heart always belonged to the Carolinas.

He is survived by his daughter, Marcia Owens (Maxine Runion); his son, LTC (R) Mark Owens, daughter-in-law, Dr. Angela Owens; and his beloved grandchildren, Haley, Courtney and Daniel Daith Owens.

He will be remembered as a faithful servant, devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and a true Southern gentleman whose life reflected honor, humility, humor, and heart. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.

A private family service will be held at a later date where his remains will be jointly interred with his loving wife Christa.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his memory to a veterans’ organization or animal rescue charity of your choice.
