The Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy has added 120 acres to the Roan High Preserve in Mitchell County, expanding protected land that borders Pisgah National Forest. The new property includes headwater tributaries and parts of Gouges Creek, providing clean water and trout habitat in the Nolichucky River watershed. Officials say the acquisition also strengthens wildlife corridors, protects high-elevation habitats for rare and endemic species, and preserves the scenic views that draw hikers and outdoor enthusiasts to the area. The Roan High Preserve now totals more than 1,200 acres of conserved land in the heart of the Roan Highlands, stretching from the crest of Roan High Knob to the foot of the Roan Massif. Conservancy spokespersons note the land will be permanently managed as a nature preserve, ensuring it won’t be developed and supporting decades of conservation work in this iconic mountain region.
