WAMY Community Action has been ordered to immediately suspend all programs funded by the federal Community Services Block Grant after a lapse in federal funding. The Stop-Work order from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services affects WAMY’s Family Development, Bridges, and Volunteer Services programs.
The suspension is due to Congress not passing a federal budget or continuing resolution for the fiscal year that began October 1st, leaving funds for CSBG programs nationwide unavailable. WAMY cannot spend, purchase, or commit any additional CSBG funds until further notice.
Executive Director Brittany Luxton says the timing is devastating for families who rely on WAMY, especially as SNAP benefits are also being cut heading into the holidays. She adds that this is not related to the organization’s performance, and the stop-work order will cost WAMY $62,000 in already spent funds.
The organization is asking for donations to help continue serving vulnerable community members. WAMY says it remains committed to its mission and will provide updates as state and federal guidance becomes available.
