A groundbreaking ceremony was held this morning for Sawmill Village, a new affordable housing development at the corner of U.S. 19E and Sawmill Hollow Road in Burnsville. The project will include 26 small homes ranging in size from 450 to 650 square feet.
A Commons Building will provide shared laundry facilities, storage space, and a community meeting room. The program is designed to serve low-income elderly residents, people with disabilities, and small families currently living in substandard housing.
The project is expected to be completed by the summer of 2026. Applications are being accepted at Northwestern Housing’s Yancey office, located at 23 Woodland Drive in Burnsville.
Speakers at today’s ceremony included Scott Farmer of the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency, U.S. Congressman Chuck Edwards, and Luke Fowler of Northwestern Regional Housing. Parker Patterson presented a $1 million donation from the State Employees Credit Union Foundation to support the project.
Northwestern Housing Enterprises is developing Sawmill Village with other funding coming in part from commercial and state advantaged loans, a Yancey County infrastructure grant, and a major grant from Dogwood Health Trust.
Since its creation by the General Assembly, the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency has financed more than 321,000 affordable homes and apartments statewide, representing $34.4 billion in housing investments.
