James David “J.D.” Yelton

James David “J.D.” Yelton, age 78, of McKinney Cove, passed away on Saturday, November 1st, 2025 at Yancey House, surrounding by his loving sons and brother.

Born on August 3rd, 1947, he was a native of Mitchell County, and the son of the late James and Irene Yelton.  He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ophelia “Peanut” Yelton; brothers: Roger and Ferrell Yelton; and sisters:  Doris Duvall, Maxine Ollis, and Louvella Yelton.

James was a home builder and had a passion for his work as a carpenter.  He was drawn to the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and feeding the birds.  He also loved old cars and his tractor.  A well-known tradition of his was making apple butter to share and enjoy with his family. Most importantly, his heart was filled with love for his family, friends, and his old dog, and nothing meant more to him than spending time with them.  His presence will be missed by so many who loved him, but his memory will live on in their hearts.

Family meant everything to him, and he leaves behind a brother, George Yelton and wife, Alice, of Avery County.  James was a proud father to 4 sons:  Jr. Yelton and wife, Lisa, of Spruce Pine; Jeffery Yelton and wife, Jennifer, of Bakersville; Danny Yelton and wife, Crystal, of Avery County; and Randell Yelton of Marion.  He was blessed with 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him great joy.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Friday, November 7th in the chapel of Yancey Funeral Services.  Rev. Mike Dale Laws and Rev. Roger Griffith will officiate.  Burial will follow in the L.G. Gouge Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 12 noon prior to the services at the funeral home.
