The Beacon Center of Spruce Pine is an overnight warming center that offers protection from the cold weather when a night is classified as a Code Purple night (temperature is 30 degrees or below). The Beacon Center will reopen on November 10th .

On Code Purple nights, the Beacon Center opens at 6:00 p.m. and closes the following day at 8:00 a.m. The Beacon Center is located in the fellowship hall of the Spruce Pine United Methodist Church (11090 Highway 226 South) and will remain open through February 2026.

The mission of the Beacon Center is to provide a warm, safe, non-judgmental space to sleep during extreme cold for the Mayland community. Bobbi Abele and Danna Gibson, co-directors of the Beacon Center of Spruce Pine, said, “this is the fourth year of operation for the Beacon Center of Spruce Pine and we are so fortunate to be able to provide this resource to the Mayland community and surrounding areas.” According to Abele and Gibson, the Beacon Center of Spruce Pine is a partnership with the Spruce Pine United Methodist Church, First Presbyterian Church (Spruce Pine), Trinity Episcopal Church (Spruce Pine), and others. The Beacon Center is staffed by volunteers and is seeking volunteers.

If anyone is interested in volunteering for the Beacon Center, please contact Bobbi Abele (bobbiabele@gmail.com) or Danna Gibson (dannagibson60@gmail.com).
