As overnight temperatures drop into the 20s tonight and continue through the weekend, local officials are reminding residents that the Beacon Center in Spruce Pine will be available as an overnight warming center during periods of extreme cold.
The Beacon Center operates on “Code Purple” nights, when temperatures reach 30 degrees or below. It serves as a temporary shelter for individuals and families who need a warm, safe place to sleep. The center provides cots, blankets, and a heated space to ensure no one is left out in the cold.
The warming center is located in the Fellowship Hall of Spruce Pine United Methodist Church at 11090 N.C. 226 South. It is a ministry of the church and other local congregations working together to support those in need during dangerous cold snaps.
Officials encourage anyone without adequate heat or shelter to take advantage of the Beacon Center, especially with the coldest nights of the season arriving tonight and lasting through the weekend.
