Effie Hughes Woody

Effie Hughes Woody, age 83, of David Clay Lane in Newland, the Roaring Creek community, passed away Saturday, November 22, 2025 at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals in Asheville.

Born on June 27, 1942 in Avery County, she was the daughter of the late Clay and Myra Gouge Hughes. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Woody who passed away in 2022. In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her brothers; Ralph, Earl, Vearl, Garrett June, and Ted Hughes and her sister; Nean Crowder.

Effie was a member of the Roaring Creek Missionary Baptist Church, she was a graduate of Cranberry High School and was retired from the Tar Heel Mica Company. She enjoyed working outdoors, particularly in her garden. She also enjoyed canning fruits and vegetables. She loved all of her family including her nieces and nephews.

Left to cherish her memories are her sisters; Kay Freeman, Helen Burleson, Estell Wilson and Myrtle Billings, several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be on Sunday, November 30, 2025 at 3:00 pm at the Roaring Creek Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dustin Hughes officiating.
