A Burnsville man scored a major win after turning to a $5 digital instant game to cure his boredom. Matthew Shepherd hit the top “Grand Fortune” jackpot in the Monopoly digital instant game, a progressive prize with odds of just 1 in 10 million. The Wednesday afternoon win totaled $952,821.
Shepherd claimed his prize Monday at lottery headquarters and received $683,651 after taxes. He plans to invest the money and may purchase a new truck.
Following his win, the progressive jackpot reset at $150,000 and had already climbed past $431,000 by Monday afternoon. Monopoly is a multi-state digital instant game, meaning jackpots grow quickly as players from several states contribute.
Digital instant games are available only online or through the NC Lottery app, with 59 titles currently offered.
Lottery funds continue to support local communities, including $30 million in state grants for school construction in Yancey County.
