AdventHealth says it is moving forward with plans to build a new hospital in Weaverville following a decision by the North Carolina Supreme Court to decline review of the final appeal in the case.

The ruling ends more than three years of legal challenges tied to the state’s approval of AdventHealth’s Certificate of Need for a 67-bed hospital. With the legal process now complete, AdventHealth can begin construction planning for the facility.

The hospital is expected to expand access to health care for residents of Buncombe, Graham, Madison, Yancey, and surrounding counties. Construction had been delayed while appeals filed by HCA Mission Health were under review.

State officials approved the project through the Certificate of Need process, which is required for major hospital construction. Long-term planning steps, including ordering specialized equipment and preparing infrastructure, were on hold until the appeals were resolved.

The Supreme Court’s decision also comes as the state prepares for a public hearing later this month on a separate application that would allow the hospital to expand to 129 beds in the future. In addition, the state approved 26 more inpatient beds for the Weaverville hospital in 2024, though that decision is currently under appeal.

AdventHealth says the Weaverville hospital will serve as a foundation for future growth and expanded medical services in Western North Carolina. Construction planning is now underway, with updates expected as timelines are finalized.
