Julia Miller Garland

Julia Miller Garland, age 97 of the Buladean community, took her flight into Heaven on Tuesday, December 16th, 2025 at her home. A native of Mitchell county, she was a daughter of the late Joe and Bessie Higgins Miller. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years Everett Garland; brothers: Hobert, Bernie, Lester and Gentry Miller; sisters: Bertie Simmons and Pansy Bennett; and two sons-in-law: James Webb and Carl Whitson.

Julia was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend whose life was rooted in service to others. She was a charter member of Green Mountain Presbyterian Church, a place she dearly loved and faithfully supported throughout her life. Her church and church family meant the world to her. Julia found great joy working outdoors, especially tending to her garden. She often said, “Young n’s, I feel so much better when I can get out and get my hands in the dirt.” She was also an avid and skilled canner of the vegetables she grew. Julia loved cooking for her family and was well known for feeding the visiting preachers, ensuring they were always cared for.

She had a true gift for quilting, creating beautiful quilts that were both works of art and expressions of love. Family was always her top priority and she treasured every visit from friends and loved ones. No one ever left Julia’s home empty handed she always made sure they took something with them. She believed strongly in living with purpose and often reminded those around her “You need to accomplish something every day.” She lived by those words and always set an example of hard work and gratitude for life.

Left to cherish the precious memories of Julia are her daughters: Earlene Whitson of Green Mountain, NC and Ella Jean Webb of Bakersville, NC; grandchildren: Angela Beaver (Doyle), Amanda Duncan (Donald) and Anthony Webb (Leia); great-grandchildren: Aidan Duncan, Ashton Beaver, Julianna Duncan and Grayson Webb; several nieces, nephews and extended family also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 20th, 2025 in the chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Rev. Garland Honeycutt will be officiating and remarks by Roger Laws.
