Barbara Ann Fisher Buchanan

Barbara Ann Fisher Buchanan, age 83, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 29th,2025 at Waters of the Roan Highlands, surrounded by the love of her family.

Born on June 20th, 1942, in Spruce Pine, North Carolina, Barbara was the youngest of seven children. She was preceded in death by her parents, Milton and Betty Fisher; her six brothers—Wes, Critz, J.M., Charles, and Harry Lee—and her sister, Grace. Growing up in a large, close-knit family shaped the gentle strength and deep compassion that defined her entire life.

Barbara was a devoted member of Berry Chapel Baptist Church. She lived her life as a quiet testament to kindness, generosity, and unwavering devotion. To her family and to countless others, she was lovingly known as “Nana,” and to many of her grandchildren, she was also affectionately called “Mawmaw.” No matter the name, she had a heart big enough to make everyone feel like they belonged. Her love was big enough for anyone who needed it.

Left to cherish her memories are her four children, who were the pride of her life; Angela Hayes (Bria) of Foscoe, Ray Buchanan (Marilyn) of Spruce Pine, Keith Buchanan (Tammy) of Newland, and Christel Carpenter (Jackie) of Spruce Pine. Barbara was blessed with many grandchildren who brought her endless joy: Andrea McKinney of Columbia, TN; Cody Buchanan of Spruce Pine; Tanya Fox (Reese) of Marion; Natasha Hoilman (Drew) of Burnsville; Erika Cable (Mike) of Cranberry; Dillon McCurry of Foscoe; Noah Buchanan of Newland; Chase Buchanan of Roan Mountain; Holly Twiddy (Houston) of Fayetteville; Braydan Buchanan of Spruce Pine; and Noah Cayden Buchanan of Newland. Her legacy also continues through her great grandchildren; Izayah Buchanan, Haven Cable (Corban Gross), Jon “JonJon” Cable (Emily Johnson), Ethan Silvers, Jayden Cable, Brandon Fox, Berkleigh Agostino, Hayden Fox, Gideon Hoilman, Lily Twiddy, Tatum Twiddy, and Eliana Stratton (affectionately known as “Elvis”). Barbara also adored her many fur grandbabies, who brought her comfort, laughter, and companionship over the years.

She was deeply loved not only by her family but also by her many nieces and nephews, and by the entire community at Waters of the Roan Highlands, where she was cherished like family.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Waters of the Roan Highlands for treating Barbara with such tenderness and dignity—“like a Queen,” as they lovingly put it. They also wish to thank Gentiva Hospice Care of Tennessee for their compassionate support.

Barbara’s life was a beautiful example of love lived quietly but powerfully. Her presence will be deeply missed, and her memory will continue to shine through the generations she nurtured.
