Harold G. Smith, age 87, of Georges Fork Community, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, January 23rd, 2026. He was the son of the late Howard Samuel and Edna Mae Gouge Smith. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his sisters: Millie Perry and Kathy Robbins.
Harold graduated from Harris High School in 1957 and began a long and purposeful career in the trucking industry. A hard worker, Harold rarely stopped and always made sure his family was taken care of. On July 5th, 1959 he married the love of his life, Betty and they were married for almost 67 years.
In his free time Harold enjoyed being outdoors and most of the time that meant being surrounded by water; bass fishing. He was also fond of bluegrass music and the comfort it brought to him. Above all, Harold was a dedicated husband, father and brother who always put his family first and loved them all unconditionally.
Left to cherish Harold’s memory is his loving wife of 66 ½ years, Betty Buchanan Smith; sons: Tim Smith (Freda) of Canton, David Smith (Melanie) of Carlton, GA, Van Smith (Kim) of Fairview and Dale Smith (Crystal) of Hendersonville; a sister, Linda Ledford of Spruce Pine; and a host of nieces and nephews and other extended family also survive.
A Graveside Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27th, 2026 in the Tolley Cemetery. Dr. Darren Waldroup will be officiating.
