Richard Luther Bailey, age 83, of the Micaville Community, is now resting in the arms of Jesus. He passed on Thursday, February 19th, 2026 at his home. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Luther and Geneva Southers Bailey.
On December 17th, 1961, Richard married the love of his life, Shirley. Together they built a beautiful life centered on family and hard work. Their marriage served as the foundation for the family they cherished so deeply.
Richard was known for his strong work ethic and dedication. He worked for over twenty years in Connecticut with Pratt & Whitney and Felspar Corporation. After many years he returned home to Burnsville, the town where he was born and raised. In 1993, Richard opened Bailey’s Small Engine Repair, proudly operating his own business for more than fifteen years. He took great pride in serving his community and customers quickly became friends.
Above all, Richard was a family man. He loved his wife and children wholeheartedly and nothing brought him greater joy than time spent with his grandchildren. An avid outdoorsman, he found peace in nature hunting, camping and especially taking his grandchildren on outdoor adventures. He treasured long walks in the woods, where he would reflect and meditate, appreciating the quiet beauty around him. Richard was also a talented woodworker, creating beautiful pieces with his hands and pouring care into every detail. He also took great pride in remodeling their home, making it not just a house, but a place filled with warmth and memories.
Above all he was a friend to all who knew him. His kindness, steady presence, and generous spirit left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Richard was always ready to lend a helping hand.
Those left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 64 years, Shirley Ann McMahan Bailey; son, Richard Dale Bailey; daughter, Victoria Lynn Letterman (Michael) all of Burnsville ; four grandsons: Richard Dale Bailey Jr., Christorpher James Bailey, Gary Scott Pandofi (Laura) and Matthew Letterman; one granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Bailey; two great-grandchildren: Teagan and Brinkley; brother, David Bailey (Deborah) of Burnsville; two sisters: Jean (Eddie) of Connecticut and Carol McMahan (Don) of Apex.
