Suspect Arrested in Stolen Check Investigation

A suspect has been taken into custody following an investigation into an altered and duplicated business check. The suspect attempted to deposit the fraudulent check into a bank account opened under a fictitious name.
Through the use of advanced investigative technology, Detective CJ Wilson with the Yancey County Sheriff’s Office was able to identify the individual responsible. With coordinated efforts with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation the suspect was located in Newton County, Georgia. Maucarie Devaghun Holmes, 24, of Fitzgerald, GA, was taken into custody on. North Carolina charges and extradited back to North Carolina.
Holmes is currently being held in the Yancey County Detention Center on charges of Felony Identity Theft under a $250,000
This case highlights the importance of interagency cooperation and the effective use of modern investigative tools in combating financial crimes.
“All Yancey County businesses, as well as our citizens, are encouraged to closely monitor financial accounts and report suspicious activity promptly” said Sheriff Shane Hilliard.
