Ron McKinney, age 90, of Beans Creek, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 28th, 2026. A native of Mitchell County, he was a son of the late Earl and Nannie Buchanan McKinney. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Lee Garland McKinney and his siblings: James Earl McKinney Jr., Arie McKinney, Ruth Hopson, Dave Buchanan, Edith Burleson and Maxine Keaton.
Ron retired from Renfro’s Tree Service after many dedicated years of climbing and trimming throughout the community. Known for his skill, steady hand and fearless spirit, Ron was still climbing trees at 80 years old and doing what he loved; until his wife finally insisted it was time to hang up his climbing gear. Tree trimming wasn’t just his job; it was his passion and he took great pride in doing it well.
An avid outdoorsman, Ron felt most at home doing something outdoors. He loved hunting, tending to his garden and working the soil. If he wasn’t outside, he could often be found with a good book in hand, especially old Westerns. Above all, Ron was a family man. His grandchildren were the light of his life and brought him immeasurable joy. They were a cherished and transformative part of his world and he treasured every moment spent with them.
Left to cherish his memory is his daughter, Vickie Garland Yelton of Beans Creek; sons: Tim McKinney (Jill) of Inman, SC and Jeff McKinney (Joy) also of Beans Creek; cherished grandchildren: Garrett, Grace, Doug and Benjamin McKinney. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
A graveside service to honor Ron’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3rd, 2026 in the Beans Creek Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. G.B. Garland will be officiating.
