The Yancey County Health Department has been awarded a $100,000 grant to address critical water safety issues persisting in the wake of Hurricane Helene. The funding, provided by the Community Foundation of North Carolina, is earmarked specifically to help local families restore access to safe, clean drinking water in their homes.
While major infrastructure repairs have progressed across the region, many households in Yancey County continue to struggle with damaged private wells and water systems. This grant aims to bridge the gap for residents who have not yet received adequate assistance through other recovery programs.
According to Misty Randolph, Health Director, the funds will be used for:
- Well Repairs: Fixing existing systems damaged by the storm.
- New Installations: Implementing new wells for residents with unmet needs.
- Inspection Costs: Covering required environmental health inspections.
- Financial Relief: Removing the financial barriers that prevent families from securing a reliable water source.
The Health Department is working in close partnership with the Yancey County Long-Term Recovery Group to identify eligible households. Funding will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to households demonstrating high financial need and a lack of prior assistance.
Residents who believe they may qualify are encouraged to contact the Yancey County Health Department at 828-682-6118 to discuss eligibility and the next steps for their recovery process.
