Authorities in McDowell County are warning residents about two separate scam and suspicious activity reports in the area.
The first involves a text message claiming you have overdue traffic fines and must pay immediately to avoid penalties like license suspension or registration issues. The message includes a link to a website that appears legitimate, but officials say it is fake. The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles does not send payment demands by text and does not threaten immediate consequences that way. Residents are urged not to click the link, not to provide any information, and to delete the message.
In a separate incident, the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office says two women have been reported going door-to-door posing as cleaning product service providers. They are offering free sample cleanings in exchange for reviews and are reportedly accompanied by another individual waiting outside in a box van.
While no crimes have been reported, deputies warn this could be a tactic used to gain access to homes. Residents are encouraged not to open the door to unknown individuals offering unsolicited services.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office during business hours or McDowell County Communications after hours. Tips can also be submitted through the sheriff’s office mobile app.
Officials say the best advice—if someone shows up offering free cleaning services, keep your door shut.
