Crews continue working to contain wildfires in Mitchell and McDowell counties as dry conditions keep fire danger high across North Carolina.

The Poplar Fire in Mitchell County remains at 370 acres and 90 percent contained. Crews are monitoring containment lines and working to put out remaining hot spots. The fire is burning in an area with heavy storm debris from Hurricane Helene, increasing wildfire risk. Hikers are urged to use caution along the Appalachian Trail near Indian Grave Gap.

In McDowell County, the Jumping Branch Fire has grown to 275 acres and is now 30 percent contained. More than 170 personnel are on scene, using both ground and aerial operations to slow the fire’s spread. Drivers are being asked to avoid N.C. 80 to allow crews to work safely.

Officials say the Jumping Branch Fire was caused by improperly discarded smoking material, and a Marion woman has been cited in connection with the fire.

A statewide burn ban remains in effect as crews continue battling fires across the region
