James Bruce Gouge, 83, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 12, 2026 surrounded by the love of his family. He was the son of the late Fletcher and Edith Henson Gouge.
A quiet and easy-going man, Jim was known for his gentle nature, kind heart, and steady presence. He never needed to be the center of attention. Jim was happiest living a simple life, working with his hands and spending time with his family.
Jim was a skilled, hardworking carpenter who took great pride in his craft. Over the years he built much more than houses and furniture – he built a life filled with memories, friendships, and a legacy that will live on in things he created and the people he touched.
Jim enjoyed the simple pleasures of life and was a man of few words, but his actions spoke volumes. His dependability and quiet sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Glenda Stocton Gouge. He is survived by his daughters: Julie (David) Butler of Erwin and Cyndi (Alvin) Ollis of Bakersville; granddaughter: Allison Ollis; grandsons: Zachary Butler, Ethan Butler, Isaac (Brittany) Ollis, and Isaiah (Eric) Ollis; great-grandsons: Thatcher Ollis, Shiloh Ollis, and Canyon Ollis; brothers: Robert Gouge, Dayton Gouge, Larry Gouge, and Junior Gouge; sisters: Brenda Bartlett and Linda Powell; brother-in-law: Ronnie (Joan) Stocton; and sister-in-law: Wanda (Wayne) Stocton.
Though he may no longer be here to share a quiet smile or offer his steady presence, his love and work of his hands will remain with us.
Rest peacefully, Daddy, your work here is done!
A graveside service will be held Saturday, August 15 at 11:00am at the Earnest Gouge Family Cemetery on Heaton Ridge Road in Roan Mountain, Tennessee. Rev. Randy English will officiate, with music under the direction of James’ family. Zachary Butler, Ethan Butler, Isaac Ollis, Isaiah Ollis, David Butler, and Alvin Ollis will serve as pallbearers.
