It’s North Carolina Landslide Preparedness Week. Before Hurricane Helene, landslides probably weren’t something most of us thought much about. But landslides can happen suddenly, with little time to react.
Knowing whether your home is in a landslide-prone area before heavy rain arrives could save your life.
According to the National Weather Service, five inches or more of rain in 24 hours can be enough to trigger landslides in the North Carolina mountains.
If you suspect a landslide is happening, don’t go outside to investigate. Move to a safer location inside your home. Escape vertically—go upstairs or get to a higher level, such as a sturdy kitchen counter.
