What was life like for the women who endured the hardships, fears, sacrifices, and uncertainties of the American Revolution?
The Mitchell County Historical Society invites the public to experience a unique Readers Theater production, Six Women. Six Voices. Stories History Left Unfinished, on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at Mitchell High School in Ledger, North Carolina.
Written and directed by Daniel Barron in collaboration with Chelsea Wilson Thayer, the production gives voice to women whose stories have long remained in the shadows of history.
To date, fifty-five individuals have been identified as Revolutionary War veterans who were either born in the Toe River Valley or closely connected to it through family, service, or settlement. Each man had a story worthy of remembrance. Each also had a wife or companion whose name is seldom recalled and whose voice has rarely been heard.
This original presentation is offered in tribute to those women and to countless others whose lives helped shape the early history of the Toe River Valley and the nation.
Featured in the production: Dorothy Wiseman Baker, Hannah Baker Davenport, Keziah Robertson Sevier, Agatha Ethington Washburn, and Nancy Ann Griffith Silver.
Through dramatic readings based upon documented history and carefully researched family traditions, these women speak of love, loss, courage, sacrifice, and survival during one of the most turbulent periods in American history.
Admission is free.
