Yancey K9 Retires From Service

Yancey County Sheriff Shane Hilliard has announced the retirement of K9 Officer Rico. On June 21st, the Sheriff’s office recognized the retirement of K9 Rico, an 11-year-old Dutch shepherd who has served the Yancey County Sheriff’s Office with distinction for the past 11 years. Sheriff Shane Hilliard chose Rico when he was just an 8-week-old pup, and he has been a loyal and dedicated member of the team ever since.
Rico’s service began with Deputy Roscoe Bailey, and after Bailey’s retirement, he continued his work with Sgt. Christian Jones. Throughout his career, Rico has shown exceptional bravery, skill, and dedication in protecting and serving the citizens of Yancey County.
According to Sheriff Hilliard, “From the moment I picked Rico out, I knew he was destined for greatness. We are incredibly grateful for his service.”
Sgt. Christian Jones also reflected on Rico’s impact: “Working with Rico has been an honor.  Rico has set a high standard for future K9s, and his legacy will be remembered by all who had the privilege of working with him.”
As Rico steps into his well-deserved retirement, we wish him a life filled with relaxation, joy, and plenty of treats. Thank you, Rico, for your extraordinary service.
