If you have noticed some smoke in the air, it more than likely is coming from McDowell County. The U.S. Forest Service has begun a 2200-acre prescribed burn on the Grandfather Ranger District in McDowell County to reduce the risk of wildfires.
This burn is the Singecat burn unit located directly North of Pleasant Gardens between Lake Tahoma and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Trail closures will be in effect for the Mountains to Sea Trail through the Singecat ridge from Blue Ridge Parkway to Armstrong Creek Rd.
There is also a prescribed burn planned in Burke County during the week, the Steels Creek burn unit located directly North of Morganton, NC along Hwy 181.
Prescribed burns lower wildfire risk to nearby communities and supporting ecosystems, wildlife, water quantity and quality.
