- While anyone stuck in a war zone of any kind has my sympathy, the situation in Afghanistan and Sudan are very, very different. In Afghanistan it was people who were not US citizens caught in that mess, people who had assisted the US. The US citizens now in Sudan and not part of the State Department or the military have been warned for years it is not safe there. Some were on private business, or are dual citizens who live there. They have been honestly told for years that a major operation to get them out when violence breaks out is not really an option. Some have been arrogant, or clueless, with a false sense of safety because they are Americans. Some have misjudged the risk they were told about. Some were willing to take that risk. I would not have been. Thoughts and prayers for their safety while plans are made by governments, families and their employers to get them out.
