Homelessness in this country has always bothered me. It has been a problem since long before anyone decided to start noticing and blaming immigrants entering this country “illegally.” I was working on the streets with homeless veterans and elderly people when no one was using them to make divisive political points. That was back when homeless veterans and the elderly were simply ignored. It was back before anyone here in our community was using homelessness to make bogus arguments about building codes and housing laws. That was back when the law or lack of law allowed many of these people manufacturing these arguments and resentments to take advantage of anyone they wanted including immigrants.
