Hoke “June Bug” Benfield, Jr.

Hoke “June Bug” Benfield, Jr., age 66, of Crab Orchard, passed away at his home on Tuesday, September 5th, 2023. A native of Avery County, he was a son of the late Hoke and Lockie McKinney Benfield. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Lee Phillips and Naomi Woody. June Bug loved being outdoors and especially enjoyed digging ginseng, hunting and fishing. He loved to help people any way that he could, but especially liked working with his brother, Sonny, doing masonry work. June Bug had never met a stranger, having a humorous personality and always joking around.

Surviving are his two daughters: Heather English and Tiffany English (Jesse), all of Spruce Pine; five grandsons: Zeke, Jeremy, Gavin, Mason and Riley; a brother, Sonny Benfield (Lois) of Minneapolis, and five sisters: “Sissy” Pauline Shell (Dean) of Roan Mountain, TN, Emma Trivett (Richard) of Crossnore, Estella Burleson of Three Mile, Ann Webb (Barney) of Cranberry, and Ellen Garland (Burl) of Bakersville. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends survive him as well.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, September 11th at Powdermill  Baptist Church. Preacher Michael Burnop will officiate. Burial will follow at Big Meadows Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Noah Holcomb, Seth Holcomb, Silas Burleson, Grant Carnett, Mitch Hoilman and Randy English. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m. at the church prior to the service.
