8th Annual Mayland Black Jar Honey Contest

Come out and help decided the best tasting honey in Mitchell, Avery and Yancey counties and help support the association’s mission to help bees and beekeepers in our tri-county area. WNC honey has won numerous international awards and is known for its rare and varietal flavors. Our area boasts honey from the rare sourwood tree, tulip poplar, basswood, spring fruit flowers, and so much Appalachian goodness.

The Eighth Annual Mayland Black Jar Honey Contest is open to the public and will determine whose bees have produced the best tasting honey from our area. Admission and tastings are free and open to the public. If you’d like to be an official judge and cast your vote, a $10 donation is suggested. There will also be honey for sale at the event and a silent auction for bee themed baskets and items.

All honey entered in the contest is judged on taste alone, and entries are wrapped in a black  covering to allow a blind taste test. The competition is always strong as authentic honey flavors are as unique as wines.

Any beekeeper from the three-county area can enter their honey. For full details on entry, see https://toecanebeekeepers.net/contest/

Drop by anytime between 6-8 p.m. and head to the mezzanine. Make sure you give yourself enough time to taste, talk about bees, vote and enjoy handcrafted beer from Homeplace Beer Co., our host.
