North Carolina legislators essentially wrote themselves out of the state’s public records law last week. This new law is a staggering blow to democracy because access to public records is the cornerstone of a transparent and accountable society. Public records are also the lifeblood of investigative journalism and citizen empowerment. They are how all us, not only journalists, hold institutions, organizations and governments accountable. From examining crime data to analyzing court records to suing government officials to keep public records public this is important. People need to write or email our state representatives.
