Herbert “Pop” Bennett

Herbert “Pop” Bennett, age 88, of Poplar, went Home to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 15th, 2023, at his home, surrounded by his loving wife.

A native of Mitchell County, he was one of eight children to the late Luther and Hester Peterson Bennett. He was also preceded in death by an infant son and all his seven siblings: Pauline Bennett, Albert Bennett, Ruth Bennett, J.M. Bennett, Malone Bennett, Mary Thomas and Patsy Barnett.

When he was able, he attended Roans Chapel Freewill Baptist Church in Buladean.

Pop was a carpenter by trade, a storyteller, a gardener, and the world’s best cornbread maker. He believed everything was better with a little (a lot) of bacon grease. All his grandkids were the apples of his eye. He never met a stranger, and he was always ready to ‘hope’ anyone in need. Known as quite the character, he always had his ‘Pop sayings’ for any situation. He liked his coffee ‘strong enough to make a puppy pull a freight train’. Pop will be greatly missed by us all.

Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of almost 56 years, Lois Ledford Bennett; two daughters: Rachel Lewis of Poplar and Tammy Peek and husband, Raleigh, of Marshall; grandchildren: Brittany Waycaster (Dylan), Austin Lewis, Destiny Nash (Daniel) and Canaan Peek (Kristen); great-grandchildren: Quinci Wise, McKinzie Wise, Lukas Waycaster, Aidan Nash, Kamdan Nash and Esther Rose Peek and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Bennett of Pennsylvania. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, October 23rd in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Canaan Peek and Keith Tipton will officiate. Burial will follow in the Bennett Cemetery at the Bailey Settlement.

Pallbearers will be Austin Lewis, Raleigh Peek, Canaan Peek, Dylan Waycaster, Lukas Waycaster, Jonathon Peterson and Robert Barnett. Honorary pallbearers will be Daniel Nash, Jimmy Byrd and Aidan Nash. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home.

The family would like to thank Laura Young with Compassionate Care WNC for the wonderful care and love given to Pop, as well as to the family. Flowers are appreciated, or memorials may be made to Compassionate Care WNC at 856 Georges Fork Road, Burnsville, NC 28714.
