A good argument can be made for nonintervention based on the horrors in the Middle East introduced by intervention that goes back decades. That is horror imposed on the people of the Middle East, all of them. Believing or seeming to express that “those people,” all of them, somehow have always brought the horror down on themselves is a very different thing. I know lots of people, have some family, who have fought and worked in the Middle East as a result of ongoing conflict. I don’t know any of them who think about or refer to the people there in that way. They have respect for their humanity and for lives lost. Many of them argue for staying out of it, many of them argue that we helped break it and now we have to keep trying to help fix it. They disagree about that. They do not disagree about the humanity of the people stuck in it.
