Betty Jean McKinney Bennett

Betty Jean McKinney Bennett, age 82, of the Cane Creek Community, went Home to be with the Lord on Monday, November 6th, 2023, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.

A native of Mitchell County, she was a daughter of the late Herbert Richmond “H.R.” and Biddie Ann Buchanan McKinney.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Billy Scott Bennett; sisters: Ruth Greene and Ibbie Wyatt; brothers: Rev. Herby McKinney, Wilkie McKinney and Lloyd McKinney; sisters-in-law: Delle McKinney and Louise McKinney and brothers-in-law: Joe Greene and Dewitt Wyatt.

Betty was a life-long member of Roan Mountain Missionary Baptist Church who enjoyed reading, hummingbirds and gardening.  She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She took care of her brother Buddy for many years and worked for Hospice and Palliative Care of the Blue Ridge for 23 years.

Surviving is her daughter, Susie Harris; sons: Darryl Bennett, Billy Bennett and wife, Cindy and Roger Bennett all of Bakersville; grandchildren: Taylor Bennett, Darren Gardner, Rebecca Gardner, Ethan Harris (Laken), Kayla Bennett, Dillon Bennett, Amber Bennett, Austin Bennett and Shaylee Bennett (Derick); great-grandchildren: Jayden, Jace, Garrett, Jon, Presley, Gabby, Weston, Rylie, Ariane, Nolan, Makayla, Jaylen and Braylon; one brother, Buddy McKinney of Bakersville and a special niece, Valerie Biddix.  Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, November 8th at Roan Mountain Missionary Baptist Church. Pastors Russell McKinney, Mark McKinney and Tony McKinney will officiate.  Burial will follow in the Green-Young Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. at the church prior to the funeral service.
