Howard Lee Gunter

Howard Lee Gunter, age 91, of Beaver Creek Road in Spruce Pine, passed away Saturday, November 18, 2023 at Mitchell House in Spruce Pine.

Born on March 16, 1932 in Mitchell County, he was the son of the late Willis A. and Iva Mae Burleson Gunter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Houston Gunter who passed away in 2020. He was also preceded in death by his brothers; Avery, Ray and Ralph Gunter and his sisters; Ada Silver, Nora Deal and Ruth Ayers.

Howard was a lifetime member of the Beaver Creek Baptist Church. He served two years in the U.S. Army and was discharged with the rank of Corporal. He worked for Blevins Oil Company for over thirty-five years. He loved the outdoors, gardening, riding four wheelers with his many buddies, he was a huge North Carolina Tar Heels fan and working jig saw puzzles. But, the joy of his life was his family especially his three grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory is his daughters; Leigh Swann and husband, Steve of Matthews and Lynn Winkler and husband, Christopher of Hickory; his grandchildren; Andrew Swann, Lacey Swann and Peyton Winkler; brother and sister-in-law; Clay Houston and wife, Naomi; and his nieces and nephews; Mike and Rhonda Gunter, Judy Dillingham, Cathy Norwood, Steve Gunter, Richard Gunter, Mike Biddix, Dale Biddix, Mark Houston, John Houston, Sam Houston, Tommy Houston and Lizzy Houston Coffey.

A time to support the family, share memories and receive friends will be on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Webb Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 in the Chapel of Webb Funeral Home with the Rev. Brandon Pitman and Rev. Ken Mashburn officiating. Interment will be in the Spruce Pine Memorial Cemetery

The family would like to extend a special ‘Thank You’ to the staff of Mitchell House and Medi-Home Hospice for their wonderful care of Howard during his illness.
