Shop With A Sheriff Success

PRESS RELEASE

Yancey County Sheriff’s Office held three days of shopping with area children for our annual ‘Shop with a Sheriff’ program. 2023 brought joy and festive cheer to 75 children in need. This annual initiative of the Sheriff’s Office, dedicated to spreading the spirit of Christmas, goes beyond traditional outreach efforts by providing children lunch and a unique shopping experience with a staff member, deputy, or even the Sheriff.
The selection of children for participation in the program results from a collaborative effort involving teachers, counselors, principals, and school resource officers working together to identify those who would benefit the most. The program is funded by generous contributions from several community churches, businesses who advertise on the annual Sheriff’s Office calendar, and some generous community members. The Sheriff’s Office allocates an average of $300 for each participating child. The funds are utilized to ensure that every child receives essential items, including new clothes, undergarments, a warm coat, and a sturdy pair of shoes. Then, after the essentials, the children get to pick out some toys.  In addition to having the kids, we were able to help 50 senior citizens as well.
“We believe in the power of community and giving back, especially during the Christmas season. ‘Shop with a Sheriff’ is more than just a shopping spree; it’s about creating lasting memories and bringing smiles to the faces of children who may be facing real-life challenges,” said Sheriff Shane Hilliard. “With profound gratitude, I extend my heartfelt acknowledgment to all the businesses that supported us, be it through advertising, providing meals, or offering generous discounts. Your contributions are sincerely appreciated, and I want to express a sincere ‘Thank You’ for your invaluable assistance.”
The success of “Shop with a Sheriff 2023” highlights the significance of partnerships between Churches, local businesses, and law enforcement in creating meaningful and memorable experiences for the community and has a positive impact on the lives of children in our community.  We would like to thank Heritage EMS, Yancey Probation, and Parole and Burnsville Police Department for assisting us with the shopping.

Sheriff Shane Hilliard and all the staff at the Sheriff’s Office wish everyone in our community a Merry Christmas!
