A domestic disturbance in Old Fort led to a McDowell County man being arrested for assaulting two deputies. Twenty-three year-old Manuel Valdez Jr. is facing multiple charges, including felonious malicious conduct by a prisoner, resisting a public officer, and assault on a government official.
The incident unfolded on December 10th when deputies from the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office responded to a distress call regarding a domestic dispute between Valdez and a woman at a residence in Old Fort. Upon arrival, deputies attempted to intervene and defuse the situation.
According to law enforcement officials, Valdez, allegedly uncooperative, disregarded commands from deputies and proceeded to assault one of the law enforcement officers. Valdez then attempted to flee the scene. As authorities were working to apprehend Valdez, he reportedly launched a second assault on another deputy. The situation escalated further, resulting in both deputies sustaining injuries during the altercation.
After a brief struggle, deputies successfully subdued Valdez, and he was taken into custody. He is currently being held on a $55,000 bond. Both assaulted deputies received medical attention for their injuries and are expected to recover fully.
