Steve Horton

Steve Horton, age 83, of the Banks Creek Community, passed away on Monday, February 5th, 2024.  A native of Yancey County, he was preceded in death by his parents, Opal Riddle Horton and Max William Horton; sister, Nancy Hensley; brother, David Horton; and son-in-law, John Finnegan.

Steve was a member of the first graduating class of Cane River High School in 1959 and a graduate of Warren Wilson Junior College in 1962.  He was a retired carpenter, brick mason and farmer.  He enjoyed his herd of black angus cattle, the outdoors and bear hunting.

Surviving are his loving wife of 62 years, Mary Napier Horton; daughter, Stephanie Finnegan of Raleigh; son, John Horton of Raleigh; nephew, Victor Horton (Misty); two great-nieces, Brenley and Baedyn Horton; sister-in-law, Rosa Horton; and three special cousins, Joyce, Janice and Judy, all of Burnsville.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, February 12th in the chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Pastor Michael Banks will officiate.  Burial will follow in the Banks Creek Cemetery where seven generations of his family are buried.  The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
