Yancey Farmers’ Market Safety and Space Concerns

At the monthly meeting of the Burnsville Town Council, Yancey County Farmers Market spokesperson Christina Gordon requested that the town continue to make available the current location near the Town Square for the upcoming Farmers’ Market. The plan had been for the Farmers’ Market to move to recently constructed Yancey County Resources Center on Swiss Avenue. According to Gordon, there are safety and space concerns with the new facility. The Swiss Avenue location is a pavilion designed for 18 vendors and does not have any storage space. The Yancey Farmers’ Market has now grown to over 30 vendors. Gordon also said there are safety concerns at the new location with parking and foot traffic. She asked the Council to consider letting the market open on April 13th in the same location near the town square as it has been in for the past several years. The mayor said there is a concern with that location because the property is currently for sale by private owners and thus can’t be guaranteed. The Council put off any decision until after their March meeting to allow more time for discussion.
