Toe River Arts Spruce Pine, Owen Gallery has an exhibition of paintings titled Desserted Deserts and Beach Bumz by Will Eskridge. The exhibition will be open to the public Thursday-Saturday through March 30 and then Tuesday-Saturday April 1 – April 13, 10:30am – 5pm.
Will is from Athens, Georgia and uses acrylic paint in a decidedly vivid color palette. The paintings of desert landscapes and offbeat animals including bats, opossums, and raccoons helps bring solace to his new life without his father. The paintings are a nod to his father’s humor and the wonderful trips they took together to the desert. Will says “The large scale size of the pieces is meant to amplify the magnitude of loss, the vastness of these landscapes, and to show my dad’s humble, yet big heart and love he had for his family and our get-togethers. These paintings are past, present, and future as I explore these new waters without my father. He passed while working on my last series which had a profound effect on my life and work.” Concepts of alien abduction, afterlife, and childhood memories are all conjured in Desserted Deserts and Beach Bumz. The motley crew of animals are juxtaposed with fun-loving latenight desserts hovering above the vast and colorful landscapes.
