MCC, Town and County Solve Hotel Tax Issue

After nearly a year of discussion a decision has been made to transfer the Mayland Community College hotel property into Mayland Enterprise Corporation. Mayland Enterprise will operate the new hotel.  Mayland Enterprise Corporation will make an annual contribution to Mitchell County and the Town of Spruce Pine from its revenue.  Questions had arisen over how Mayland Community College, which is an educational nonprofit organization, could pay taxes on the hotel’s revenue. According to County Attorney Lloyd Hise the agreement will be the town and county providing services and Mayland Enterprise Corporation making an annual contribution as a gesture of gratitude. Those payments will probably begin in 2022, since it is not likely the hotel will have any significant revenue in 2021. In July of 2019 Mitchell commissioners allotted $150,000 for renovations and repairs to Mayland Community College for the Pinebridge Inn project. They also appropriated another $150,000 toward renovation and repair that is contingent on availability of funds through the year 2028-29. The hotel is considered important for economic development so people have a place to stay while in the area.
