James Klein

James Klein, 84, of Celo, passed away Friday, October 29, 2021.

Jim lived a life of service to his community and love for those around him. Born and raised in Steger, Illinois, he served as a parish priest in Naperville, Illinois for five years, a rural missionary in eastern Kentucky for six years, and as a mental health counselor and hospice volunteer in Yancey County for the last forty years of his life.

Jim was a devoted family man. He married Mary Kay Rougier in 1969 and the couple raised two children, Eric and Kristin, in Burnsville.

After Mary Kay died suddenly, Jim was blessed with the rare gift of finding true love twice in his life, the second time with Rio Alden of the Celo community. Rio and Jim lived a cozy life in Celo enjoying the company of friends, community members, and their grandchildren Miranda, Zinnia and Zane.

He was a thoughtful man, well-read and a wonderful singer. A remarkably gentle and loving man, Jim brought light into the world with his kindness, genuine smile and endearing sense of humor.

A vigil was held last weekend; those who wish to give something in his memory are encouraged to donate to Hospice of Yancey County, 856 Georges Fork Road, Burnsville, NC 28714.
