Haley Brooke Johnson

Haley Brooke Johnson, age 29, of Johnson City, formerly of Burnsville, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, November 21st, 2021 at her home.

A native of Yancey County, she was the daughter of Barry and Robin Johnson. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Raymond Whitson, and paternal grandmother, Ima Jean Westall.

Haley was a 2011 graduate of Mountain Heritage High School and had attended the University of North Carolina in Charlotte. She was a member of South Estatoe Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday school. Haley spoke at various churches on Women’s Day. The most inspiring thing that came out of her 29 years was her loving outreach for those less fortunate than herself, helping the homeless, ministering at halfway houses, and visiting jails in both Yancey County and Sullivan County in Tennessee speaking to the women and delivering her ministry of music and love through her guitar. However, her greatest passion and the most profound impact she ever made was helping women struggling with addiction.

Surviving in addition to her parents, Barry and Robin of South Toe, is her daughter, Paxton Nola Johnson; brother, Luke Johnson and fiancée Ashlyn Randolph of South Asheville; maternal grandmother, Shirley Whitson of Big Creek; aunts: Lisa Honeycutt (Earl) of Big Creek, Lynn McArthur (David) of Charlotte and Annette Funk (Dan) of Columbus, OH; uncles: Mark Whitson (Mary) of TN, Bill Johnson of Charlotte, and Sam Johnson of Atlanta. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family and friends also survive.

A funeral service to celebrate Haley’s life will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, November 29th in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Pastor Gene King and Pastor Ben Cole will officiate. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday in the Westall Cemetery.

“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Haley lived her daily life by this Maya Angelou quote. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations be made to South Estatoe Baptist Church at 32 South Estatoe Baptist Church Road, Burnsville, NC 28714 for a community outreach walking track Haley wanted to start for others to be able to get healthy, both mentally and physically, and to be together to support one another.
